Question : BASIC AMENITIES IN METROPOLITAN CITIES



(a) whether due to mass exodus from villages to the cities the metropolitan cities of the country are lacking in basic amenities;and

(b) if so, the steps taken by the Government in this regard?

(a)&(b): In post-independence era while population of India has grown three times, the urban population has grown five times.The ever increasing number of slum dwellers causes tremendous pressure on urban basic services and infrastructure. In order to cope with massive problems that have emerged as a result of rapid urban growth, the Government has launched the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) on 3.12.2005 with the basic objective of assisting cities and towns in the provision of infrastructure and basic amenities to the urban poor.The Sub-Mission of Basic Services to the Urban Poor(BSUP) -(for 63 identified cities)and Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) - (for other cities/towns) address the problems of housing and basic services such as water, sanitation,roads,streetlights etc. in slums/low-income localities for benefit of the urban poor.
