Question : GROYNE ALONG SEA COAST



(a) whether the Government has any proposal to construct `GROYNE` along the sea coast in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise including Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu; and

(c) the steps taken and the funds allocated for the purpose during the last three years and the current year?

(a) & (b): As per the information available with Central Water Commission, the State Government of Tamil Nadu had submitted a project proposal comprising of 32 Groynes for construction under External Assistance Project; out of which, seven works were proposed in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The proposal was examined by CWC and comments sent in October’2008. Further, the Government of Puducherry has envisaged construction of five Groynes along the sea coast. The State Government of Kerala has also envisaged construction of 21 Groynes under special grant-in-aid of Rs. 175 Crore to the state for Coastal Zone Management sanctioned by the 12th Finance Commission.

(c): No other funds have been allocated for the aforesaid works during the last three years and the current year.
