(Figures in lakh tonnes)

Particulars

Sugar Season 1996-97 Sugar Season 1997-98 Sugar Season 1998-99 (Provisional)

1. Carry over stocks 79.07 66.01 53.70

2. Production 129.05 128.44 155.20

3. Total availability 208.12 194.45 208.90

4. Internal Consumption 136.75 139.78 141.45

(c) : The installed capacity of sugar industry is about 154 lakh tonnes as on 31.1.2000 and meets the consumption requirements of the country. Due to enlarged duration of sugar season in some States, the sugar production in the country is higher than the installed capacity of the industry. There are a number of new and expansion projects still under implementation. With the implementation of these projects, the installed capacity of the industry is likely to go up further.

(d) & (e) : Each sugar factory is ear-marked a specific cane area by the respective State Governments from where they can source their raw material i.e. sugarcane. Sugar factories are having either direct contract with the sugarcane growers of their areas or through the cane cooperative societies wherever existing. Coordination of sugarcane production by the farmers in their areas of operation is one of the key functions of the sugar mill management.
