Question : RENAMING OF CITIES



(a) the role played by the Union Government in the nomenclature of cities in the States of the country;

(b) whether the State Government of Karnataka has changed the names of 12 cities recently without the approval of the Union Government;

(c) if so, the details thereof and the action taken thereon;

(d) whether the Government has any proposal to change the names of various cities and to give them Indian names;

(e) if so, the details thereof; and

(f) whether the Government proposes to set up a Commission to look into the issue of renaming of cities and giving them historical names and if so, the details thereof?

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS (SHRI HARIBHAI PARATHIBHAI CHAUDHARY)

(a): For changing the names of villages, towns/cities, railway stations etc., the proposals received from the respective State Government are considered in this Ministry in consultation with the agencies concerned. Thereafter, if found appropriate, the Ministry conveys its ‘No Objection’ to the State Government concerned for issuing required Gazette Notification.

(b) & (c): No Madam. The Ministry has given its ‘No Objection’ for change of names of 12 cities recently in the State of Karnataka as per list given below:

(d)&(e): The Ministry has issued guidelines for changing names of cities/towns etc. If any proposal is received from any State fulfilling these guidelines, this Ministry accords its ‘No Objection’ to such change of name.
