(a): The number of domestic and foreign tourist visits to the North-Eastern states
of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and
Tripura during the years 2005, 2006 and 2007 are given below:-

(b): Providing of accommodation facilities to tourists is mainly a private sector activity.
As on 31.12.2007, there were 739 rooms in 17 classified hotels in the North-Eastern States.
Development of tourism infrastructure at different places, including those in the North-East,
is primarily the responsibility of the State Governments/ UT Administrations. However, the
Ministry of Tourism extends Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to State Governments/ Union
Territory Administrations for tourism projects, under the scheme of Product/ Infrastructure
Development for Destinations and Circuits on the basis of proposals received from them which
are complete in all respect as per the scheme guidelines, inter-se priority and subject to
availability of funds. The amount and number of tourism projects sanctioned by Ministry of
Tourism to North-Eastern States during 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 were as under:-

The safety and security of tourists is also primarily the responsibility of State Governments/ UT
administrations. Some of the states have deployed Tourist Police at important tourist destinations,
in one form or the other.
