Question : Non-Major Ports

(a) whether the minor and inter-mediatory ports plays a dominant role in country’s trade and commerce;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the Government proposes to set up low cost non-major ports to resolve the issue of the waiting period for the ships, if so, the details thereof; and
(d) whether the Government has identified the coastline sites under Sagarmala Project for the purpose and if so, the details thereof?

STATEMENT REFERED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (A) TO (D) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.77 TO BE ANSWRED ON 3RD DECEMBER, 2015 RAISED BY SHRIMATI RAKSHATAI KHADSE REGARDING NON-MAJOR PORTS

(a)to(c):As per Section 3 (9) the Indian Ports Act, 1908, the respective State Governments have jurisdiction over Ports other than Major Ports which are also called Non-Major Ports. There are 200 such Non-Major Ports which are under the State Governments. The traffic handled by Non-Major Ports is 44.74% of total traffic during 2014-15. There is no proposal under consideration for setting up of low cost Non-Major Ports in Ministry of Shipping.
(d) As a part of the Sagarmala project a national perspective plan is developed and identification of coastal site is also included.
