Question : Operating System for India

Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government plans to develop an Operating System (OS) indigenous to India to compete with existing Operating System like Android and ios of Apple;
(b) If so, the details thereof;
(c) whether aforesaid OS will be available only in India and if so, the details thereof;
(d) the amount of resources planned to be allotted by the Government to develop OS entirely from the scratch;
(e) whether the Government will have access to all the data collected by abovesaid OS system; and
(f) if so, the details thereof?

Answer given by the minister


(a) and (b): No, Sir. However, the Government is considering development of Operating System, as part of the Government efforts to create a vibrant design and innovation ecosystem in Electronics and Information Technology.

(c): There is no policy in the Government that restricts the export & use of Indian Software Products outside India.

(d): No funds have been allocated by the Government to develop an Indian Mobile Operating System.

(e) and (f): Do not arise.
