(a) There are a total of about 28 shipyards existing in the country out of which 9 are in the public sector and about 19 shipyards in the private sector. The aggregate annual capacity of all Indian Shipyards is estimated to be approximately 0.15 million compensated gross tonnage.
(b) A total of 597 ships/vessels have been built by member shipyards of Shipyards Association of India (an association of private sector shipyards and 2 public sector shipyards under the administrative control of State Governments). The total number of ships built by the four shipyards under the administrative control of this Ministry are as under:
(i) Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. Visakhapatnam 115
(ii) Cochin Shipyard Ltd., Cochin 34
(iii) Rajabagan Dockyard of Central Inland Water Transport Corporation Ltd., Calcutta 93
