Question : COLLAPSE OF ROB UNDER CONSTRUCTION



(a) whether the Government is aware of the fact that a span of a ROB under construction near Poonokunnam, Trichur, had broken and collapsed a few months ago;

(b) whether the pillars of the ROB on which the collapsed span had hit, got damaged and that they are to be repaired or remade;

(c) if so, whether any inquiry had been made in the matter;

(d) if so, the outcome thereof alongwith the action taken thereon; and

(e) the steps taken by the Government to restart and complete the work?

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS ( SHRI R. VELU)

(a): Yes, Sir. The approach span of Railway Overbridge (ROB) had collapsed on 16.3.2004 during construction.

(b): Yes, Sir. The pillars were damaged and are required to be removed and reconstructed.

(c): Yes, Sir. Chief Bridge Engineer of Southern Railway has conducted the enquiry in this matter.

(d): The Enquiry Officer has found that the collapse of the girder was caused by buckling of staging due to external disturbance which is being looked into by the State Police.

(e): The work of construction of complete Road over bridge including the portion of work in Railway area is being done by Road and Bridge Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK). The damaged girder has been removed and the work of reconstruction of damaged pillar and girder is under progress.
