Question : Standards for Drinking Water

(a) whether the Government made the standards mandatory for drinking water being supplied by theGovernment to the people and if so, the details thereof;
(b)whether the Government has issued directives to the States to check the sample of the supplied drinking water and if so, the details thereof;
(c)whether any time-frame has been set up to ensure the supply of piped water to every householdacross the country; and
(d)if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b) As per existing guidelines, IS 10500 is to be adopted for ensuring safe drinking water supply and States/ UTs have been advised to carry out testing of drinking water sources once in year for chemical and physical parameters and twice in a year for bacteriological parameters.

(c) & (d) To enable every rural household to have Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) with 55 liter per capita per day (lpcd) by 2024, Government of India has launched Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), with an outlay of ?3.60 lakhs Crore.
