Question : REDUCTION IN RAGI AND JOWAR



(a) whether there is a drastic reduction in the production of essential cereals Ragi and Jowar in the country particularly in Karnataka,Andhra Pradesh,Tamil Nadu,Orissa and Maharashtra;

(b) if so, the details regarding production of these cereals in the above mentioned States during the last three years;

(c) the reasons for the decrease in the production of Ragi and Jowar;

(d) whether the Government proposes to increase the production of Ragi and Jowar particularly in Karnataka; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (c): Production of Ragi in the country was 1.44 million tonnes during 2006-07 which increased to 2.07 million tonnes during 2007-08 (3rd Advance Estimates released on 22.04.2008). Production of Jowar in the country was 7.15 million tonnes during 2006-07 which increased to 773 million tonnes during 2007-08.The details of production of Ragi and Jowar r>in the States of Karnataka,Andhra Pradesh,Tamil Nadu,Orissa and Maharashtra during 2005-06 to 2007-08 are given in the table below:

Production of Ragi and Jowar decreased in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra because of less area coverage under the crop during 2006-07 as compared to 2005-06.

(d) & (e): To increase the production of Ragi and Jowar in the country,including Karnataka, Government is implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Integrated Cereals Development Programme in Coarse Cereals Based Cropping System Area (ICDP-Coarse Cereals) since October 2000 under Macro Management Mode of Agriculture.This scheme is implemented on 90:10 sharing basis between Government of India and the States.Under this scheme,assistance is provided to the farmers for distribution of seeds,propagation of improved production technology,Integrated Pest Management (IPM), training of farmers including women,farm implements and installation of sprinkler irrigation system. Besides, Frontline Demonstrations are also organized by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research/State Agriculture Universities on the farmers’ fields to popularize the frontier technologies among farmers.
