Question : DIVIDENDS TO SHAREHOLDERS OF COOPERATIVE BANKS



(a) whether certain cooperative banks functioning in the country are not giving dividends to their shareholders;

(b) if so, the names of the banks and the number of years since when they are not paying dividends, bank-wise;

(c) whether the Government have tried to find out the reasons for non-payment of dividends by these banks;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) if so, the reasons therefor?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE (SHRI BALASAHEB VIKHE PATIL):

(a) Yes, Sir.

(b) Information is being collected and, to the extent available, will be laid on the Table of the House.

(c) to (e) A large number of banks are incurring losses and are having accumulated losses. Besides, though some banks have earned profit, their profit is not sufficient enough for paying dividend. These are the main reasons which could be attributed for non-payment of dividend by there banks.
