Question : Transportation of Coal

(a) the amount of freight duty charged on coal transportation in the country;

(b) the number of those railway stations where space has been provided for coal transportation;

(c) whether the Government is aware of the fact that people living near railway stations are facing many problems due to fly ash from where coal is being transported and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the Government has received any complaint of corruption in the railways regarding coal transportation; and

(e) if so, the details thereof along with the action taken by the Government regarding the said complaints?

(a) No freight duty is charged on coal transportation by rail in the country. However, distance based rail freight is charged as per the rate tables appended. In addition, Busy Season Charge at 15% (October to June) and Development Charge at 5% (round the year) are levied.
(b) There are 231 Railway Stations (Goods Sheds) open for handling coal transportation.
(c) Some complaints have been received from public/ staff in this regard and necessary steps have been taken to control the problem.
(d) No, Madam.
