Closure of Coal Mines
3123. DR. BANSHILAL MAHATO:
Will the Minister of COAL be pleased to state:
(a) the number of coal mines/blocks in Chhattisgarh where production of coal is not taking place along with the reasons therefor;
(b) whether the Government proposes to end the lease contract of the coal mines closed due to non-availability of coal;
(c) if so, the details thereof;
(d) whether any technique has been developed to restart the operation of coal mines closed due to non-availability of coal; and
(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a): List of Projects/Mines approved in South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) command area of Chhattisgarh State and coal production has not started due to the reasons as indicated against each.

(b) & (c): There is no such proposal at present.
(d) & (e): Restarting operation of mines is possible if it were closed due to safety and geo-technical reasons like adverse geo-mining condition, poor grade of coal etc. through modernization or adoption of suitable techniques if it is economical. But if the mines were closed due to exhaustion of resources, it is not reopened.
