Question : Book Fair

(a) whether a book fair was organised in Delhi this year in a joint venture of National
Book Trust and Trade Development council of India;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) the number of publishers from around the country who participated in the said fair;
(d) whether foreign publishers also took part in this book fair and if so, the details
thereof;
(e) whether the theme of the Book Fair was ‘Manushi’, which was meant to potray the
variety of books written on and by the women writers; and
(f) if so, the details thereof?

(a) Yes, Madam.
(b) The New Delhi World Book Fair, 2017 was organized by the National Book Trust,
India in collaboration with India Trade Promotion Organization from 7 to 15 January 2017 at
Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. This is the largest book fair held in the Afro-Asian region in an
area of around 34,000 sq meters and with a representation of publishers publishing books in
major Indian languages as well as various regional and language
associations/federations/guilds of publishers in the country.
(c) Around 780 publishers participated in the book fair from across the country.
(d) Yes, Madam. 19 foreign publishers took part in the book fair directly from 13
countries viz China, Egypt, Iran, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, UAE and European
Union including France, Germany, Poland and Spain.
(e) & (f) Yes, Madam. The theme was ‘Manushi: Writings on and by Women’ and the
details of various sections of the theme presentation are as follows:
1. There was a display of more than 600 books of different genres from all major Indian
languages and from publishers across the country.
2. The presentation was patterned with panels and posters portraying the journey down the
earliest times to the modern era through projection of some of the distinguished women
writers and scholars who have contributed to the making of modern society. These included
the women pioneers of modern Indian literature of 20th century, earliest recipients of Sahitya
Akadami Awards in each language, Jnanpith Awardees and other eminent writers.
3. Besides, there were parallel programs like discourses, panel discussions, meet the author
sessions, book releases, cultural presentations based on the theme, etc.
4. One of the major attractions of the theme pavilion was the NBT calendar of 2017 with
special portraits of 12 women scholars of Ancient and Medieval India.
