STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a),(b),(c) & (d) OF STARRED QUESTION NO. 560 FOR
ANSWER IN THE LOK SABHA ON 04-05-2000.
(a) & (b): In the recent past there have been two incidents of cyclone calamity which
hit Orissa only in quick succession in October, 1999. In the wake of large scale devastations
caused by the cyclones in that State the following quantities of foodgrains have been allotted
at BPL rate to the State for cyclone relief.
RICE Quantity in tonnes
1. For distribution to all cyclone affected families in 14 affected districts
(a) for a period of 5 months from November, 1999 2,93,038 to 31 March, 2000.
(b) for the period of 7 months from April, 2000 to 1,28,982 October, 2000.
2. For running community kitchens in the cyclone affected 2,000 districts by the N.G.Os/PSUs.
3. Against the quantity of rice distributed by the State Government as 51,663 gratuitous relief (free rice) during first 15 days of the super cyclone
4. Allocation for rice at BPL rate for Food for Work Programme 90,600 in the 14 affected districts

WHEAT
6. For conversion into atta and distribution amongst the cyclone 50,000 affected population in the affected coastal districts.
7. Allocation of wheat for distribution in the affected areas 90,000
8. TOTAL 1,40,000
9. TOTAL QUANTITY OF RICE & WHEAT 7,06,283
(c) & (d): The special allocations of rice at BPL rate for cyclone relief has been
extended by Government of India on the request of Orissa Government upto October, 2000.
