Question : Agreement on Economic Offenders with Japan

(a) whether any agreement has been proposed to be signed between India and Japan to nab and bring back such economic offenders who flee abroad after committing economic offence in the country and to take stringent action against them;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (c) During the visit of Prime Minister to Japan for G20 Summit, India highlighted and called for global action in dealing with fugitive economic offenders. This issue was also discussed in the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the margins of the G20 Summit. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe acknowledged that India has consistently emphasized in G20 meetings the need to address this issue as part of its anti-corruption measures. The Leaders’ Declaration issued after Osaka Summit also acknowledged the need to tackle this issue on priority.
