(a) whether the Government have formulated a scheme for the development and progress of girls in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the funds sanctioned and allocated for this scheme during the current year; and

(d) the number of girls likely to be benefited through this scheme annually?

The important schemes implemented for the development and progress of girls are as follows:-

DEPARTMENT OF WOMEN AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT:
Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS): This scheme addresses the early childhood development aspects including pre-school education, nutrition and convergence with health services.

Budget Provision 2002-2003 : Rs. 1695 crores Likely estimate of girl covered : Supplementary Nutrition (SNP) : 1.63 crores Pre-school Education : 0.87 crores
Kishori Shakti Yojna, addresses the special needs of adolescent girls.
Budget Provision 2002-2003 : Rs. 22 crores Likely estimate of girl covered : 5.28 lakhs
Women`s Economic Programme specifically addresses skill development amongst girls in an informal mode.
Budget Provision 2002-2003 : Rs. 25 crores Likely estimate of girl covered : 0.7 lakhs

MINISTRY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EMPOWERMENT:
Hostels for Scheduled Caste girls seek to encourage SC girl students to attend middle school, higher secondary school, college and University.
Budget Provision 2002-2003 : Rs. 20 crores

DEPARTMENT OF SECONDARY EDUCATION:
Strengthening of Boarding & Hostel facilities for Girl students seek to improve the enrollment of adolescent girls belonging to rural areas and weaker sections.

Budget Provision 2002-2003 : Rs. 18 crores

DEPARTMENT OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION:
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan strives to achieve the objective of universalizing elementary education and enrolling every child in school. It also focuses on the girl child and propose to bridge all gender gaps at primary stage by 2007 as well as provide elementary education of satisfactory quality with emphasis on education for life. The SSA programme now covers 561 districts in the country.

Budget Provision 2002-2003 : Rs. 1680 crores

All girls in the age group of 6-14 years in Government or Government aided schools and those presently out of school are targeted to be benefited.
