Question : IRRIGATION UNDER BHARAT NIRMAN



(a)Whether the Government has formulated any plan to irrigate sizeable area of land under the Bharat Nirman Yojana;

(b) If so, the details thereof and the parameters within which the said scheme is to be implemented; and

(c) The areas which are likely to be benefited initially thereunder alongwith the criterion laid down in this regard?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (c) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 262 TO BE ANSWERED IN THE LOK SABHA ON 11.12.2006 REGARDING IRRIGATION UNDER BHARAT NIRMAN.

(a) to (c)Bharat Nirman envisages creation of one crore hectare of irrigation potential through



(i) completion of on-going major & medium irrigation projects,

(ii) minor irrigation schemes,

(iii) extension, renovation and modernization (ERM) of major and medium projects and

(iv) repair, renovation and restoration of water bodies. The details are annexed.

The projects / schemes for creation of irrigation potential are taken up by State Governments from their own resources according to their priorities. Government of India has enhanced allocation for grants under Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) to provide support to State Governments.
