Question : Medical College Fees

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether a large number of Private Medical Colleges/Universities are charging exorbitant fee for M.B.B.S. and P.G. courses and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether any complaints have been received against the Private Medical Colleges/Universities from the parents and if so, the details thereof along with the action taken thereon;

(c) whether any mechanism is put in place by the Government to take strict action against them for reduction of fee structure; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (d): In the case of Government medical colleges, the respective State Governments are responsible for fixation of fee and in the case of private unaided medical colleges, the fee structure is decided by the Committee set up by the respective State Government under the Chairmanship of a retired High Court Judge in pursuance of the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. It is for the Committee to decide whether the fee proposed by an Institute is justified and the fee fixed by the Committee is binding on the Institute.
