Question : Performance in Sports

(a) whether the Government has assessed the reasons for not achieving desired progress in various sports being run under various sports federations in the country and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has received complaints about harassment of women players and coaches under various sports federations in the country during the last three years and the current year; and

(c) if so, the details thereof along with the action taken by the Government thereon during the said period, State/UTwise?

(a) Madam, the performance of Indian athletes in international events has significantly improved, which has not resulted in medals though. For the Olympics 2016, 119 athletes qualified for participation, for the first time. However, there is need for improvement and after Olympics 2016, in some major international events, India has done well. Some of the reasons are lack of professionalism and factionalism/infight in the sports bodies and long term strategies by National Sports Federations.

(b) & (c): Madam, no such case has been brought to the notice of the Government. However, the Government has constituted a Committee under the Chairmanship of a woman Officer of the Additional Secretary level to look into the grievances if received from any woman player/coach.
