Question : NATIONAL COUNCIL AND OLDER PERSONS



(a) whether the Government has set up National Council for Older Persons;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the National Policy on Older Persons has been fully implemented;

(d) if so, the manner in which the said policy has made the lives of senior citizens dignified and purposeful; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) & (b) Yes, Sir. The National Council for Older Persons (NCOP) was set up in the year 1999. The Ministr of Social Justice and Empowerment is the Chairperson and Secretary (SJ&E) is the Vice Chairperson of the NCOP. Eminent personalities, parliamentarians, members of social organizations, scholars engaged in the field of welfare of older persons are its members. The present strength of NCOP is 81.

(c ) & (d) The implementation of the National Policy on Older Persons(NPOP) is an on- going process. The mechanism adopted by the Ministry for implementation of NPOP and the various facilities/concessions extended by different Ministries/Departments at the Centre for the welfare of older persons are available on its website www.socialjustice.nic.in

(e) Does not arise.
