Question : Heavy Water Reactors

(a)whether the Government proposes to set up heavy water reactors in the country;

(b)if so, the names of various States where the heavy water reactors are proposed to be set up;

(c)whether any assessment has been made regarding likely impact of the rising number of heavy water reactors on the electricity generation; and

(d)if so, the details in this regard for the last three years?

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES & PENSIONS AND PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (Dr. JITENDRA SINGH):

(a)Yes, Sir.

(b)At present, Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) are under construction in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana. More PHWRs are proposed to be set up in the states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Karnataka.

(c)Yes, Sir. PHWRs are expected to contribute a significant portion of electricity to be generated from nuclear sources in the country.

(d)The share of generation of electricity from PHWRs in the last three years is as follows:
