(a): The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) which is a Statutory body for recognizing teacher
education institutions and teacher education programmes across the country has informed that as on
31.10.2016, the total number of teacher training course across the country is 24234. No data is maintained
regarding the actual number of Teacher Training Institutes. However, NCTE has started mapping of such
institutes through Geographical Information System (GIS) and through mandatory affidavits to be filled by
all recognised teacher training institutions.
(b) to (d): The teacher training institutions including Government institutions like the District Institutes of
Education & Training (DIETs) and Colleges of Teacher Education (CTEs) are involved in both pre service
and in-service training of teachers. These institutions primarily offer pre-service teacher education
programmes - DIETs offer D. El. Ed. programmes and CTEs offer B.Ed. programmes. Apart from this, at
the district level, DIETs being the pivotal resource centre also conduct in-service training along with the
Block Resource Centres (BRCs) and the Cluster Resource Centres (CRCs) whose core mandate is Inservice
Teacher Education and professional support to teachers. At the state level, the State Council of
Educational Research and Training being the State academic authority for school education, prepares
modules for teacher training and conducts some specialised courses for teacher educators and school
teachers.
The Central Government, under the flagship programme of Sarava Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and
Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) provides funding to State and UT Governments to
improve Elementary and Secondary education respectively. Under SSA, there is provision of 20 days of in
service training out of which 10 days training is organized at (BRC) level and 10 days at (CRC) level.
Under RMSA, there is a provision of 10 days of in service teacher training, including 05 days of subject
specific training and for the remaining 05 days training on ICT Component, Inclusive Education, Gender
Sensitization and Adolescent Education is provided. Under both SSA and RMSA, the focus is to give
subject specific, need based and relevant in service teacher training to both elementary and secondary
teachers for their professional development. Details of teachers trained in the last 03 years under SSA &
RMSA are at Annexure-I & II respectively.
