Question : GST Numbers

(a) whether the Government is aware that GST holders interested to surrender their GST number are facing a lot of problems and are not being allowed by the authority to surrender the GST number;

(b) if so, the reaction of the Government in this regard; and

(c) the steps which GST holders can take to surrender their GST numbers?

(a) & (b) A total of 5,93,367 applications for cancellation of registration (in FORM GST REG-16) have been received by Central tax officers across the country. As on 02.03.2020, a total of 5,01,052 applications have been disposed (either accepted or rejected by the tax officers).

Certain taxpayers who had obtained registration voluntarily under GST were facing problem in surrendering their registration. To address this issue, clause 119 of the Finance Bill, 2020 (Bill No. 26 of 2020) has been tabled in the Parliament which seeks to amend clause (c) of sub-section (1) of section 29 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 so as to provide for cancellation of registration obtained voluntarily under sub-section (3) of section 25.

(c) Detailed provisions regarding cancellation of registration under GST have been provided under section 29 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.
