Question : Construction of Four-lane Highways

(a) whether majority of the existing National Highways are two-lane and the same are being expanded to four-lane and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has any proposal to construct four-lane roads in Perambalur, Thuraiyur, Musiri Kulithalai, Thokaimalai and Manapparai in Tamil Nadu;

(c) if so, the details and the present status thereof;

(d) whether the Government has received any proposal to convert Thiruchengode to Sangagiri State Highway into National Highways and construct four-lane road on the same highway; and

(e) if so, the details and the present status thereof?

(a) At present, the total length of the National Highways in the country is about 1,32,500 km. The lane- wise distribution is as under:

The 4-laning works on NHs are taken up depending upon inter-se priority, traffic density and availability of funds.

(b) & (c) The details of National Highway Projects envisaged for construction in Perambalur, Thuraiyur and Musiri Kulithalai in Tamil Nadu are mentioned below:

Manapparai is connected through Trichy-Dindigul section of NH-45 (new NH-83), which is already 4-laned. The Thokaimalai-Manapparai road is not a National Highway.

(d) & (e) The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways receives proposals for declaration of various State Roads/Highways as new National Highways (NHs) from various States/Union Territories (UTs) including the State Government of Tamil Nadu. The Ministry declares State Roads/ Highways as new NHs from time to time keeping in view the requirement of connectivity, inter-se priority and availability of funds. About 1,843 km of State Roads have been declared as National Highways during April 2014 to March 2019 in the state of Tamil Nadu.
