Question : UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES



(a) the details of the number of colleges and universities set up during each of the last three years and the current year, State/UT- wise particularly in rural areas;

(b) the funds spent for this purpose; and

(c) the proposals pending in this regard from States and the action taken so far in this regard for the coming year?

(a): The University Grants Commission (UGC) has reported that during the last three years and the current year 18 State Universities and 81 State Private Universities were established. As per information available from the UGC, 6726 colleges were established during 2011 to 2014 in the country. Details are in Annexure- I.

(b): The Central Government had launched the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) of setting up one Model Degree College (MDC) in each of the identified 374 Educationally Backward Districts (EBD) in the XIth plan period, which has since been subsumed under the new CSS of “Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan”(RUSA). The details of the funds sanctioned State-wise and year wise are in Annexure-II.

(c): The UGC has stated that 31 proposals are pending with it for grant of Deemed to be Uni- versity status to higher educational institutions. The matter of review of status of existing Deemed to be Universities is under judicial review in the Supreme Court of India.
