Question : SMOKING IN TRAINS



(a) whether the Railways have taken concrete steps to check smoking in trains; and

(b) if so, the details thereof alongwith the number of cases where penalties were imposed on people found smoking in trains during each of the last three years and the current year?

(a) & (b): Yes, Madam. Smoking has been banned in trains and railway premises and is a punishable offence under the provisions of Railways Act, 1989 and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003. Regular drives are conducted to check smoking in the trains and on railway premises and persons so caught are charged as per relevant provisions of the law. However, no separate statistics are maintained in this regard. In addition, public are educated through various media, not to smoke in trains and railway premises by displaying notices at prominent places both at the stations and inside the coaches.
