Question : Veterinary University-Colleges

(a) the details of the veterinary university/colleges at present in the country, State/UT-wise;

(b) whether the Government proposes to set up more veterinary universities/ colleges in the country;

(c) if so, the details thereof along with their location; and

(d) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to step up more research centres in the field of veterinary science in the country?

(a) The details of veterinary university/colleges at present in the country, State/UT-wise are annexed.

(b) & (c) Veterinary Education is a state subject and setting up of Veterinary Colleges/Institutions is under the domain of State/UTs Government to meet their requirement of trained veterinary manpower as per the availability of resources whereas setting up of Central Veterinary College/Institution is under the domain of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (DADF), Government of India in consultation with Veterinary Council of India (VCI), confers recognition to veterinary qualifications awarded by veterinary institution by inclusion in the First Schedule of Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984.


(d) Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is encouraging research in veterinary sciences through various proactive research initiatives at national level. Various research programmes have been initiated as per the priority areas and the fatality of the diseases and their impact on public health. The list of various Animal Health initiatives is as follows:

a) All India Network Programme on Haemorragic Septicaemia
b) All India Network Programme on Bluetongue
c) All India Network Programme on Gastro-intestinal Parasitism
d) All India Network Programme on Neonatal Mortality (New Initiatives in XII Plan)
e) All India Network Programme on Diagnostic Imaging and Management of Surgical Conditions in Animals (New Initiatives in XII Plan)
f) Outreach program on Ethno-veterinary Medicine.
g) Outreach program on Monitoring of Drug residues and Environmental Pollutants.
h) Consortia Research Platform on Diagnostics and Vaccines (New Initiatives in XII Plan)
i) All India Coordinated Research Project on Animal Disease Monitoring and Sero-surveillance in Animal being coordinated by National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Investigation, Bangalore.
j) All India Coordinated Research Project on Foot and Mouth Disease being coordinated by Project Directorate on Foot and Mouth Disease(PD-FMD).

These programmes are being coordinated by Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, Bareilly and are having various collaborating centres in State Agricultural Universities and Indian Council of Agricultural Research institutes to tackle researchable issues pertaining to livestock in various regions of the country for sustainable livestock industry through better animal health management and production.

The High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL), Bhopal has been upgraded to a full-fledged institute named National Institute of High Security Animal Disease in XII Plan.

An International Foot and Mouth Disease Laboratory having Bio Safety Level III+ as high containment laboratory facility is being constructed at Arugul Bhubaneswar to serve as reference laboratory for carrying out cutting edge research in this economically important disease.
