Question : INDIGENOUS HORSE BREED



(a) The details of the places where indigenous (Horses) equine breed , such as Kathiawari, Marwari. Spiti and Zanskari are found and their number at present:

(b) whether a pony census (horse population) shows that while there were 1893 ponies in Manipur in 2003, the number fell to 1218 in 2007 and now there are about 400 left; and

(c) If so, the steps taken by the Government to increase the population of horses/pony in the country?

(a) The home tract of Indigenous horse breed and their numbers as per Indian Livestock Census (1LC-2007) is as follows:

(b) As per the Indian Livestock Census conducted by Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries (DADF), there were 2,000 Horses and Ponies in Manipur in 2003, the number fell to 1,000 in 2007, while in 2012, the numbers have increased to 1,101.

(c) Under Centrally Sponsored Scheme `Conservation of Threatened Breeds`, which was started in 2002-03, the DADF, Government of India up to 2013-14 had sanctioned Rs. 105.12 Lakhs to Government of Gujarat for conservation of Kathiawadi Horse; Rs. 70.20 Lakhs to Government of Jammu & Kashmir for conservation of Zanskari Pony; Rs. 42.00 Lakhs to Government of Rajasthan for conservation of Marwari Horse; Rs. 89.39 Lakhs to Government of Arunachal Pradesh for Conservation of Bhutia Pony; Rs. 77.00 Lakhs to Government of Himachal Pradesh for conservation of Spiti Pony and Rs.77.00 Lakhs to Government of Manipur for conservation of Manipuri Pony. This component, `Conservation of Threatened Breeds`, is being subsumed under `National Livestock Mission5` w.e.f. 2014-15, under which 100% grant-in-aid is provided to State Governments to the tune of Rs. 40.00 Lakhs per breed for conservation of recognized indigenous Horse breeds.
