Question : MID-DAY MEAL



(a) whether the Government have made a provision of only one rupee per beneficiary for the nutritious food ;

(b) if so, the facts and reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government propose to increase this amount and also its share in it ;

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(e) if not, the reasons therefor;

(f) whether some State Governments have shown their inability to implement the mid-day meal scheme in schools;

(g) if so, the details along with the reasons therefor, State-wise; and

(h) the amount spent on mid-day meal scheme for the schools in the country during 2001-2002 and 2002-2003, State-wise?

(a),(b),(c),(d)&(e): No, Sir. As per the Mid-day Meal scheme foodgrains, free of cost, are allocated @ 100 grams per child per school day to the State Implementing Agencies and also admissible transportation charges are reimbursed for lifting foodgrains from the nearest Food Corporation of India Depot to the distribution/ school points.

(f)&(g): Yes, Sir. These States/UTs have sought funds to implement a cooked meal programme as per the order dated 28.11.2001 of the Hon’ble Supreme Court passed in WP( C) 196/2001.

(h): No funds are allocated to States/UTs. Year-wise expenditure incurred under the Scheme during 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 are given below:
