STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (d) OE THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 217
REGARDING IT EDUCATION ASKED BY SHRI AMITAVA NANDY TO BE ANSWERED ON 13.03.2007.
(a) to (d) : The Ministry of Tribal Affairs implements a scheme of Grant-in-aid to Voluntary
Organizations working for the welfare of the Scheduled Tribes, wherein assistance for Computer
Training Centers is also provided as one of the components, The scheme is implemented through
Non-Governmental Organizations, Institutions or Organizations set up by Government as Autonomous
Bodies either under a statute or as Societies registered under the Societies Registration Act,
1860, Public Trusts, Companies established under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1958 and
Educational and other institutions, like Local Bodies and Cooperative Societies. Further, under
another scheme of Vocational Training Centres, training in Computers is also considered as one
of the trades in which vocational training in imparted. This scheme is implemented through State
Governments/ Union Territories (UTs).A scheme called `Information and Communication Technology
(ICT) @ Schools` is being implemented by the Department of School Education and Literacy,
Ministry of Human Resource Development. Under this scheme, financial assistance is provided to
the States/UTs on the basis of Computer Education Plans submitted by them for providing computer
literacy in the Government and Government-aided Secondary and Higher Secondary schools in the
country. Though this scheme is not only meant for IT education of the tribal youth of the country,
schools in the tribal areas can also take benefit of this programme through the State Governments.
