(a): There are some Government Schools in the country which have single teachers. State-wise
details of such schools are at Annexure.
(b): Issues related to teacher recruitment, service conditions and teacher deployment in government
schools are in the domain of State Governments and UT Administrations. Data regarding teachers’
capacity school-wise in the country is accordingly maintained by respective State/UT. However, at
elementary and secondary levels, teachers’ capacity in each school is available at
www.schoolreportcards.in.
(c) & (d): Under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the Central Government supports State Governments
and UTs for additional teachers to maintain the Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR), as per the norms of the
Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009. A total of 19.48 lakh teacher
posts have been sanctioned under SSA, out of which 15.74 lakh teacher posts have been filled up as
on 31st March, 2016.
The Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) scheme provides for appointment of 1 Head
Teacher and 5 Teachers for every new/upgraded secondary school on regular basis. So far 121307
teachers including headmasters have been sanctioned for government secondary schools for
upgraded/new schools and additional teachers for existing government secondary schools. Out of
these sanctioned teachers, 75935 teachers have been recruited by the States/UTs.
Further, the Central Government in various meetings, State Education Secretaries conference,
Joint Review Missions (JRM) advises States/UTs on timely teacher recruitment and deployment of
teachers.
