(a) whether illegal mining of iron ore in the country is causing loss to the Government worth several thousand crores of rupees;
(b) if so, the quantum of loss suffered due to the illegal mining of iron ore during the last three years; and
(c) the action taken by the Government against the persons who are found to be involved in illegal mining during the said period along with the number of persons found guilty including the outcome of the said action?

(a) to (c): As per section 23C of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Act, 1957, state governments have been empowered to make rules for preventing illegal mining, transportation and storage of minerals. Prevention and control of illegal mining comes under the administrative and legislative jurisdiction of State Governments. Therefore, details related to quantum of loss suffered due to illegal mining of iron ore and action taken against the persons involved in illegal mining are not maintained centrally.
However based on the quarterly returns on illegal mining submitted by various state governments to Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) (a subordinate office of the Ministry), details of instances of illegal mining (both major minerals and minor minerals) reported in various parts of the country and the action taken by State Governments, for the last three years i.e.2013-14 to 2015-16 are at Annexure-I to Annexure-III.
