Question : Building of Ports in Foreign Countries

(a) whether the Government has received proposals from some countries to build ports on their coast lines, if so, the details thereof, country-wise;
(b) whether the Government has set up proposes to set up an institutional mechanism to undertake International projects and if so, the details thereof and the time by which it is likely to be set up:
(c) the estimated quantum of foreign exchange likely to be earned therefrom; and
(d) whether the Government has received proposals from Iran to develop its Chabahar ports and to invest in special economic zones located at various ports and if so, the response of the Government thereto?

(a)to(d):The Cabinet Committee on Security approved the proposal of the Ministry of External Affairs regarding India’s participation in the Chahbahar Port Project on 18.10.2014. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for operationalising the Chahbahar Project has been signed on 06/05/2015 between India and Iranian authorities.

A Special Purpose Vehicle(SPV), Indian Ports Global Private Limited, which will be a holding company, with equity participation from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust(JNPT) and Kandla Port Trust (KPT), has been formed on 22.01.2015.

The quantum of foreign exchange likely to be earned cannot be estimated at this stage as the SPV, Indian Port Global Private Limited is yet to commence operation.
