Question : DURGAPUR STEEL PLANT

(a) whether certain sections of Durgapur Steel Plant have proposed for better utilization of in-house facilities of SAIL for improving economic condition;

(b) if so, the details thereof ;

(c) whether the Government propose to use hot metal from Durgapur Steel Plant in nearby Alloy Steel and Produce Stainless Steel slabs there and use the same for Salem Steel Plant;

(d) if so, the benefits likely to accure therefrom; and

(e) the efforts being made to reduce the cost of production and also improve the quality of steel products?

(a) & (b): Yes, Sir. Suggestions have been received from Hindustan Steel Employees Union and Hindustan Steel Workers Union of Durgapur Steel Plant for better utilisation of in-house facilities for improving the economic condition of the plant. The main suggestions inter-alia are:- Immediate improvement in production and operating efficiency in Bolani Ore Processing Plant. Procurement of coke and gas from Durgapur Projects Limited pending revival of coke oven, convert CCP Billlets to 12/14 mm rod through sick Re-Rolling Mills paying conversion cost till new Wire Rod Mill, materialises. Conduct business surveys to sell wheels, axles and sleepers in international market. Suggestions for making investments in various equipments/machines. Introduction of new units in the plant like coal injection plant, wire rod mill etc. Settlement of issues relating to personnel matters of workers.

(c) & (d): Hot metal from Durgapur Steel Plant is being used regularly at Alloy Steel Plant. However, hot metal alone can not be directly used for making stainless steel slabs for Salem Steel Plant. The benefits that acrue from use of hot metal from Durgapur Steel Plant to Alloy Steel Plant is as a substitute for scrap and savings in power cost.

(e) Continuous efforts are being made to improve process parameters for better quality of steel products and cost reduction.
