Question : GRANTS TO METROPOLITAN MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS



(a) whether it is a fact that recently a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Union Government on the development of civic amenities as release of grants, therefor;

(b) if so, whether the Union Government are considering release of grants to other Metropolitan municipal corporations direct, especially to the Chennai Municipal Corporation for the developmental activities;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) if not, the reasons therefor?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 125 FOR 27.11.2001 REGARDING GRANTS TO METROPOLITAN MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS.

(a): Yes, Sir. Rs.100 crores have been sanctioned to Municipal Corporation of Delhi out of the Urban Development Fund for construction, improvement and strengthening of roads to augment the infrastructure facilities. 50% of the amount would be in the form of grant and the balance 50% as loan. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed to this effect between the Central Government, DDA and MCD for this purpose.

(b)to(d): No, Sir. At present the scheme contemplates assistance to urban infrastructure projects in Delhi. The question of extending this to urban infrastructure outside Delhi is under examination.
