Question : CLOSING OF POST OFFICES IN KERALA

(a) whether there is any move to close down a number of Post Offices in Kerala; and

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF COMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (DR. SHAKEEL AHMAD)

(a) & (b): There are no plans to close down post offices in Kerala. However, single or double handed post offices located in urban areas, and Extra Departmental Branch Post Offices located in rural areas which do not fulfil the distance norms can be considered for relocation to more needy areas, or merged with nearby offices. This is in consonance with the directives in the 10th Plan, which, inter-alia, require the Department to rationalize the network and optimize resources in order to increase access to postal services, while attempting to achieve financial self sufficiency.
