Question : Monkey Menace

(a) whether the people particularly senior citizens and children are feeling unsafe in the streets due to increasing number of monkeys on the roads;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether people are feeling unsafe in the streets in colonies like South Avenue in New Delhi due to terror of monkeys; and
(d) if so, the steps taken to find out scientific ways to capture monkeys and to check their presence in the streets?

(a), (b), (c) and (d) Reports from media, and Government of NCT of Delhi, have been received in the Ministry regarding increasing number of monkeys on the roads. The Government of NCT of Delhi has also informed that such complaints have been referred to civic agencies as well as NGO’s for necessary action. The civic Agencies (SDMC, EDMC, North MCD and NDMC) capture and translocate monkeys from problematic areas and release them in Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary. The civic Agencies have released more than 20,000 monkeys.


As per information received from Department Forests & Wildlife Government of NCT of Delhi, in last 12 years in Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary (ABWLS). The Department of Forests and Wildlife, Govt. of NCT of Delhi is providing food to monkeys released in ABWLS from the habitation area of Delhi.

The Government has approved a pilot project on immuno-contraception in the year 2017 for controlling the population of wild animals including monkeys responsible for damage and destruction of crops with a total amount 10.65 crore for a period of three years to the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun.
