Question : NON RELEASE OF WATER FROM ALMATTI DAM



(a) whether due to non-release of water from Almatti dam, Sangli city in Maharashtra was partially submerged thereby causing tremendous loss to life and property;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the storage capacity of Almatti dam and the remedial steps proposed in this regard; and

(d) the expenditure incurred for construction of Almatti dam?

(a) & (b) Due to heavy rainfall there was flood situation in Sangli city in Maharashtra Government of Maharashtra reported that this flood was caused by non- release of water from Almatti dam. Government of Karnataka reported that flood situation in Sangli city was not due to storage of water at Almatti dam. Ministry of Water Resources arranged an inter-State meeting of Karnataka and Maharashtra on 22nd August, 2005 to discuss the flood situation in Krishna. It was decided in the meeting that both the State Government would exchange relevant data and studies carried out, Central Water Commission would convene a meeting of technical officers of both the States to review the studies and would chalk out a work plan to complete the studies in the shortest possible time.

(c) The Gross storage of Almatti dam is 132.08 thousand million cubic feet.

(d) An expenditure of Rs. 211.75 crore has been incurred for construction of Almatti dam.
