(a) whether the literacy rate of the country has increased from 52.21% in 1991 to 64.84% in 2001;

(b) whether any sample survey has been made on the increase in the literacy rate after 2001;

(c) if so,the details thereof,State-wise; and

(d) the present estimated literacy rate,State-wise?

(a) Yes,Sir.

(b),(c) & (d) The literacy data in the country is collected through decennial census operation conducted by Registrar General of India.According to the Census 2001,the literacy rate was 64.84%.A statement indicating the State-wise literacy rate is attached.The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) conducts quinquennial surveys.As per the 61st round of NSSO survey (2004-05), the literacy rate was 67.3%.The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) also conducts sample surveys.According to NFHS-3 survey the literacy rate is 67.6%.The updated position of literacy in the country will be available only after the Census, 2011.
