Question : IMPORT FROM CHINA



(a) whether the import of sub-standard Chinese goods such as crackers, fancy lights, lampshades, etc. has witnessed a huge increase particularly during the festive seasons in the country;

(b) if so,the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government has made any assessment of the loss being incurred bythe domestic manufacturers due to increase in such imports from China and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the Government has taken any steps to boost the production and sale of domestic products and put restrictions on the entry and sale of sub-standard Chinese goods in the Indian markets; and

(e) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a)&(b): The details of cases of import of sub-standard products from China detected by the Customs Department for the last four years is as under:

(c) to (e) Government have policies in place to ensure that interest of both consumers and producers of domestic goods are not severely jeopardized by imports. To protect the consumers, quality/safety standards applicable to domestic goods are made equally applicable to imported goods. To protect the domestic producers, Trade Defense Measures like Anti-dumping & Safeguard measures are available to the domestic industry to seek relief against unfair trade practices by exporters of goods from other countries.

In case of electrical goods, safety is ensured through Electrical Wires, Cables, Appliances and Protection Devices and Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2003. Import of fireworks (crackers) is restricted and subject to licensing under Import Policy.
