''Police'' and ''Public Order'' are State subjects and Government of India helps State/UTs in combating cyber-crimes by assisting them through advisories and funds under various schemes. States are primarily responsible for prevention, detection, prosecution and investigation of crime through their law enforcement machinery. The Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) take legal action against the cyber-crime offenders as per the relevant provisions of the IT Act, 2000, Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other applicable laws. National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) collects and maintains statistical data of police recorded cognizable crimes from 36 States /Union Territories. As per the data maintained by NCRB, a total of 428 cases, 1,083 cases & 1,597 cases were registered under Punishment for cheating by personation by using computer resource [section 66D of Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000] during 2014, 2015 & 2016 respectively.
