(a) In order to maintain standards of higher education the UGC (Establishment and Maintenance of Standards in Private Universities) Regulations 2003 were issued on 27.12.2003 and, are in force. These regulations apply to every university established by or incorporated under a State Act whether publicly funded or otherwise. The regulations apply to all the degrees/diplomas/certificates offered by such universities as were in operation on the date of the notification and also on universities established since then. AICTE has also its own regulations for the purpose.

The UGC and AICTE also undertake on the spot inspections of the universities by sending inspection committees to see that the stipulated parameters of the regulations are being followed.
