Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT & POVERTY ALLEVIATION ( SHRI BANDARU DATTATREYA )

(a)to(d): Slum is a State subject and slum conditions vary from State to State and even from city to city and so a uniform and rigid `National Policy on Slums` may not be very meaningful or effective. The Government of India is seized of the problem of slums in different cities of the country and is trying to ameliorate it through a `National Slum Development Programme` (NSDP), under which funds are released by way of Additional Central Assistance to different States by the Ministry of Finance on the recommendations of the Planning Commission. Broad guidelines for improvement of the conditions of slums are issued from time to time.
