Question : GUNNY BAGS FOR RICE



(a) whether the Union Government and the State of Punjab are suffering losses due to restriction on use of once used gunny bags for rice;

(b) if so, whether the Government has received requests from Punjab for allowing the use of such gunny bags by the rice sellers; and

(c) if so, the details thereof and the reaction of the Government thereto?

(a) whether the ex-mill price of sugar in the country has been lower than the average cost of production of sugar for a large part of the 2010-11 sugar season;

(a): Rice is packed after milling only in new gunny bags.  The cost of such new bags is reimbursed to procuring agencies by Government of India.  Hence, there is no question of loss on packing rice in gunny bags.

(b): No such proposal has been received from the Government of Punjab.

(c):  Does not arise.
