Question : NON MOTORISED URBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM



(a) whether the Government proposes to levy dedicated taxes on private car owners for funding non-motorised urban public transport systems;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government proposes to encourage development and sale of lighter and more efficient bicycles;

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(e) whether there is a proposal to provide funds for mass rapid transport system in States;

(f) if so, the details thereof; and (g) the measures taken or proposed to be taken for expediting action with regard to implementation of the above proposals?

(b): Does not arise.

(c)&(d): The draft National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP) envisages promoting non-motorised transport like bicycles etc.

(e)&(f): It is proposed to provide Central financial assistance to facilitate the development of mass transport systems in large cities.

(g): The NUTP is intended to motivate States to take the necessary initiatives to improve the transport system in their cities, with appropriate support from the Central Government.
