Question : CONSTRUCTION OF TOILETS



(a) whether the Government is planning to introduce low cost effective technologies for constructing toilets, if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has plans for documentation of number of household toilets in the country, if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government has launched any mobile application to record the number of household toilets and their usage in rural India; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) Yes Madam. While, under Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), menu of Technological options for household toilets including low cost technologies are already available, the Ministry has in September, 2014, set up an Expert Committee chaired by Dr. R.A. Mashelkar, to encourage the development of new technologies in the sanitation sector, and examine the same for accreditation.

(b) The Ministry had asked the States to carry out a baseline survey on sanitation coverage in rural areas, which has been completed in 248224 Gram Panchayats of 30 States/UTs. Gram Panchayat-wise details have been uploaded on the online Monitoring Information System (MIS) maintained by the Ministry. States have now been asked to upload household-wise details of the Baseline Survey data on the MIS. As on 1.12.2014, out of 18.08 crore rural households, details of 8.72 crore households with respect to sanitation coverage have been uploaded on the MIS.

(c) & (d) The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has launched a Mobile application capable of recording the photos of household toilets constructed along with their coordinates and uploading the same on the MIS.
