(a) the states of the environmental clearance given for the construction of a golf course and three hundred bungalows in Malad Creek in Mumbai which has resulted in the destruction of hundreds of acres of mangroves; and
(b) the action proposed/taken by the Government in this regard?
MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS (SHRI NAMO NARAIN MEENA):
(a) : The Ministry of Environment and Forests has recently accorded environmental clearance for construction of residential complex, “Satellite Gardens†at CTS No.620-A/1-A/4-A/2/1 to 11 of village Malad at General A.K. Vaidya Marg, Goregaon (East) and construction of residential cum shopping complex at CTS No.480 and 480/1 of village Malad (East) at Ranisati Marg, Malad (E), Mumbai, under Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 1994 and 2006 subject to terms and conditions including statutory clearance under Coastal Regulation Zone Notification as applicable.
Further, Ministry had accorded clearance under Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 1991 for developing a golf course in CTS No.1, Sy. No.161 of village Pahadi, Goregaon, Mumbai by M/s Usha Madhu Housing Development Corporation Limited along Malad Creek in Mumbai, 4th July, 1996. Subsequently, the Ministry received representations from the NGOs indicating destruction of mangroves by the developer of the said golf course.
(b) After taking into consideration the representations of the NGOs, a site inspection of the golf course site was undertaken by the Ministry and the clearance was suspended on 27th September, 2002. This suspension order has been challenged by the developer vide Writ Petition No.1470 of 2003 in the High Court of Bombay. The matter is presently subjudice.
