Question : Fortification of Food

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been assigned the mandate to formulate standards for fortification of foodgrains; and

(b) if so, the details thereof along with the outcome thereon?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND
FAMILY WELFARE

(a) & (b): Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has been established, interalia, for laying down science based standards for articles of food. Standards for fortified Atta and Maida are prescribed under regulation 2.4.1(2) and 2.4.2 (2) of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. Further, laying down/revision of standards for food items, including food grains, is a continuous process.
